Emergencies are unpredictable, but your response shouldn’t be.
Whether you're sitting at your desk, relaxing at home, or dining at a new restaurant, having a crisis plan in place can save your life and the lives of those around you. At Tomahawk Strategic Solutions, we train clients to think critically and act decisively under pressure. The foundation of that ability is planning.
Deliberate Plans: Your First Line of Defense
Deliberate plans can be made in advance for the locations you know well — your office, your home, your school, etc. These plans should include:
- Escape routes: Know the quickest exits from each room and floor.
- Barricade points: Identify where you can lock down or shelter in place.
- Roles and responsibilities: Who calls 911? Who assists others?
- Reunification locations: Where do you regroup once it’s safe?
We help organizations and families design these protocols through detailed risk assessments and scenario-based training. The goal is simple: When a threat emerges, there’s no hesitation — just action.
Hasty Plans: Think Fast, Think Smart
Not every situation allows for a deliberate plan. You might be traveling, at a concert, or trying a new restaurant. That’s when a hasty plan comes into play. It takes just 10 seconds to ask yourself:
- Where is my nearest exit?
- Where is a secondary exit if the first one is not viable?
- What could I use to hide or as a barricade?
- If I have to fight as a last resort, what improvised weapons are available?
- If I get separated, where will I meet my group?
These quick mental rehearsals improve your ability to respond under stress. Don’t think of this as being paranoid; think about it as being prepared.
Why Planning Matters
In the chaos of an emergency, the human brain often defaults to inaction or panic, especially without a clear next step. Having a plan helps override that freeze response, giving your mind something to follow when adrenaline kicks in and logic fades.
As we emphasize in our Interactive Threat Seminars, “Hope is not a strategy.” Preparation is. And that preparation should take place both before the threat of a crisis and also in the moments just before one begins.
Empowerment Through Readiness
The power of a plan isn't just tactical, it's psychological. Knowing where to go, what to do, and how to act transforms fear into focus. At Tomahawk, we help organizations, families, and individuals develop that focus through immersive, realistic training led by experts in threat response.
When it comes to emergencies, the best time to plan was yesterday, and the next best time is right now.
