Joseph Bucchignano retired from the New York City Police Department in 2023 following a distinguished 20-year career, serving most recently as a Detective Specialist. During his tenure, he spent 13 years assigned to the NYPD Emergency Service Unit (ESU), a full-time tactical and rescue unit responsible for responding to critical incidents throughout New York City’s five boroughs.
While assigned to ESU, Joseph served in several specialized capacities, including as a tactical paramedic and explosive breacher. In the latter part of his career, he also served as an adjunct tactics instructor and was selected for ESU’s Apprehension Tactical Team — a seven-person specialized unit responsible for the daily execution of high-risk search warrants and tactical apprehension operations.
In addition to his law enforcement background, Joseph brings more than 27 years of experience as a New York State Paramedic, working in both urban and rural operational environments. He also spent 10 years assigned to NYC FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 1 as a rescue and logistics specialist, deploying to multiple disaster zones across the United States in support of emergency response and recovery operations.
