Surviving a Crisis: Why Situational Awareness Can Help Save Your Life

August 6, 2025

In the critical moments when a threat emerges, one factor can drastically change your chances of survival: situational awareness.

Whether it’s an active shooter in a public space or a suspicious individual loitering near your office, your ability to observe, interpret, and act quickly and decisively can mean the difference between chaos and control. At Tomahawk Strategic Solutions, we train organizations and individuals to recognize danger before it escalates. The first step? Understand what is happening in your environment, and even more importantly, consider what might happen!

Why Situational Awareness Matters

Situational awareness is the practice of staying engaged with your environment. It's more than just “being aware.” It's the continuous process of observing your surroundings, orienting yourself to potential threats, deciding on a course of action, and taking steps to stay safe.

This skill is vital in high-stress scenarios where seconds count and emotions run high. During Tomahawk’s Interactive Threat Seminars, we walk participants through real-world scenarios to develop the muscle memory required to respond, not freeze.

The Hidden Danger of Normalcy Bias

One of the greatest obstacles to situational awareness is normalcy bias — our brain’s tendency to downplay or rationalize unusual events in order to preserve a sense of normalcy.

You’ve likely experienced this yourself. A loud bang in a parking garage? Must be construction. A door slamming hard? Probably the wind. This bias leads us to delay action in critical moments because we convince ourselves that nothing is wrong.

In countless real-world incidents, victims and bystanders alike have misinterpreted gunshots for fireworks or a suspect’s erratic behavior as someone simply having a bad day. By the time the threat becomes undeniable, it is often too late to act effectively. We may never get that opportunity back.

Observing the Right Cues

What should you look for? Tomahawk instructors teach attendees to proactively recognize “abnormal behavior patterns” such as target glancing or other subtle signs that may be precursors to a violent event.

At our seminars, we stress the importance of challenging your own assumptions. Instead of brushing off something that seems out of place, take a moment to evaluate: Could this be a threat? What are my egress options? What is my proximity to the threat? Can I safely help others?

Stay Engaged. Stay Alive.

The truth is, danger can strike anywhere. But when you are situationally aware, you’re not just reacting, you’re proactively preparing to respond. You’re shortening your decision-making window and giving yourself and others the best chance at survival.

At Tomahawk, we believe the perspective gained from attending our Interactive Threat Seminar creates confidence. And confidence leads to better outcomes. That’s why we train law enforcement, corporations, and families alike to improve their awareness, practice their response, and, if it comes to it, fight for their lives.

Because the worst thing you can do in a crisis is nothing.
